Caring for Your Sapphire Buffalo: Keeping It Top Notch
Mow Mindfully: Keep it trimmed every 5-10 days during the summer sizzle and relax to every 3-6 weeks when it cools down. Adjust the height from 2-5cm for sunny spots to 5-7cm in the more shadowy retreats.
Feed It Right: A slow-release fertiliser is your best mate twice a year; once in early Autumn and again in Spring. It’s the secret sauce for that dense growth and rich colour.
Pest Patrol: Apply Acelepryn GR pesticide in early Autumn and Spring to keep your lawn as chill as a beach day without the bugs.
Water Wisely: Water 2-3 times a week in the peak of summer and cut back to once a week during cooler months, or just when it looks a bit thirsty.
Just Right For:
Families who want a soft, durable lawn for kids and pets to enjoy.
Homeowners looking for a lush, low-maintenance lawn that thrives in both sun and shade.
Eco-conscious gardeners who prefer a drought-resistant grass that saves on water.
Maybe Not For:
Those wanting the fastest-growing lawn – Sapphire Buffalo has a steady but slower growth rate.
Anyone after a completely maintenance-free lawn – while it's low maintenance, a little care goes a long way.

Sapphire Buffalo FAQs
-
Sapphire Buffalo Grass is one of the most shade-tolerant buffalo varieties, needing just 2 to 3 hours of direct sunlight per day to stay healthy and vibrant. This makes it an excellent choice for partially shaded backyards, courtyards, and under trees, where other turf varieties might struggle.
-
To keep Sapphire Buffalo Grass looking its best, mow it once a week during the growing season. For the healthiest lawn:
Full sun areas: Keep it at 30mm to 50mm for a lush, uniform look.
Shaded areas: Maintain at 50mm to 70mm to support strong growth.
With its slow, steady growth, Sapphire Buffalo requires less mowing than many other grass types, making it a low-maintenance option for busy homeowners. -
Watering needs will depend on the season, but a deep soak is always better than frequent light watering:
Summer & hot months: Water two to three times per week to prevent drought stress.
Cooler months: Reduce to once a week, or only when the grass starts to dry out.
With its excellent drought tolerance, Sapphire Buffalo can maintain its rich green colour even with minimal watering. -
To keep your Sapphire Buffalo lawn thick, green, and resilient, apply a slow-release fertiliser:
Start of summer – Boosts strength for the hot months ahead.
End of summer – Helps recovery from heat stress.
Spring – Encourages dense growth before winter.
Regular fertilising ensures deep root development, improved drought resistance, and vibrant year-round colour. -
Like all buffalo grass varieties, Sapphire Buffalo produces some thatch over time. While this is a natural part of its growth cycle, regular lawn maintenance can prevent excessive build-up. A good lawn renovation in spring, including dethatching or aerating, helps to remove any spongy layers that may form beneath the surface. This improves airflow, promotes deeper root growth, and ensures a more even, healthier lawn throughout the year.

Sapphire Buffalo is an excellent choice for homeowners looking for a hardy, low-maintenance lawn that thrives in both sun and shade. It’s particularly well suited for partially shaded spaces, where many other turf varieties struggle. With its soft texture, durability, and ability to bounce back quickly from wear, it’s ideal for families, pet owners, and anyone wanting a beautiful, lush lawn with minimal upkeep.

Ready to measure up?
Avoid the dreaded "oops, we ran out of grass" or "uh-oh, we've got too much turf" surprises! Follow these simple steps to get your turf measurements right the first time.
Option A: Use Google Maps
You can check out our ‘how to use Google’s Measuring Tool’ here. Or;
Option B: Measure by Hand
Use the formulas below to determine how to measure for your yard. You can also download a printable PDF version of our Measuring for Turf Guide, so you’ve got all the information in front of you when you’re measuring up.
Square / Rectangle:
Length x width = m2
e.g. 5m x 5m = 25m2
Circle:
(Radius x radius) x 3.14 = m2
e.g. (3m x 3m) x 3.14 = 28.26m2
Semi-circle:
Circle calculations (left) / 2 = m2
e.g. 28.26m2 / 2 = 14.13m2
Triangle:
(Length x width) / 2 = m2
e.g. (10m x 5m) / 2 = 25m2
Unusual Shapes:
Sketch your yard, break it into shapes and use shape calculations above.
e.g. rectangle + square + triangle = m2
Varying Widths:
Measure the longest edge (length)
Divide the widths into 2m sections and measure (width 1, 2, 3, etc.)
Calculate (width 1 + width 2 + width 3) / number of width sections
Multiply by length
e.g. ((5m + 6m + 6m + 7m + 8m)/5) x 10m = 64m2
5. Add a few extra m2 per 100m2 as a buffer
