Is Empire Zoysia for you?

comparison of features and benefits of empire zoysia grass

LOW MAINTENANCE. SLOW GROWING. SHADE TOLERANT.

If Empire Zoysia was a person…

It’d be that guy that grows just enough stubble to make it look like a fashion statement, without actually ever properly grooming. He’s super easy to get along with and is the whole package: smart, sexy and loveable.

Empire will: scrub up well when his girlfriends invited him along to an event.

Empire won’t: borrow your RM’s without asking.

Empire Zoysia Grass: The Underdog of Aussie Lawns

Gather 'round, mates! It's high time we chat about the quiet achiever of the Aussie backyard – Empire Zoysia. This turf's like the dark horse that gallops into the spotlight when you least expect it, flaunting a green so lush, it'll have the neighbours peeking over the fence in awe. And let’s not forget, it’s as comfy underfoot as that retro shagpile carpet in your nan's living room.

Why Empire Zoysia is the Bee's Knees:

  • No Rush to Grow: This grass is the embodiment of "she'll be right," growing at its own leisurely pace. That means you can kick back more and mow less. More time for snags on the barbie!

  • Sip, Not Guzzle: Empire Zoysia doesn’t get thirsty too quick, but when it fancies a drink, a deep soak does wonders. It's all about quality, not quantity.

  • Eye Candy That's Foot-Friendly: With its fine to medium blades and that dark green hue, it's a treat for the eyes and a delight for bare feet.

Giving Your Empire Zoysia the Royal Treatment:

  • A Little Feed Goes a Long Way: Just a bit of slow-release fertiliser in spring and again in autumn (plus a summer boost if it's been a busy spot) keeps it looking fit for a king.

  • Easy on the Mowing: With its chill growth habit, you’ll be mowing every 2 weeks in the warm months and stretching it out to every 3-8 weeks in the cooler months. Aim for a height of 2-5cm in full sun, or let it lounge a bit longer at 5-7cm in the shade.

  • Pest Patrol: Keep those unwanted guests at bay with a dose of Acelepryn GR pesticide in early autumn and again in spring, safeguarding your lush lawn from invaders.

  • Water When Required: Empire only needs about 2cm of H20 a week - do this with the hose or Mother Nature. Just don’t let the leaves dry out and curl.

Who’s Going to Reckon Empire Zoysia’s a Ripper?

  • Low-Maintenance Lawn Lovers: If your idea of a perfect weekend doesn’t involve garden chores, Empire Zoysia's your turf.

  • Sun-Soakers and Shade-Dwellers: It's all good whether your garden's basking in the sun or lounging in the shade, needing just a bit of light to thrive.

  • Eco-Warriors: With its top-notch drought tolerance and low water needs, it's green in every sense of the word.

But Maybe Give It a Miss If:

  • The thrill of the mow is your call to the wild. This grass’s laid-back growth might leave you wanting.

Empire Zoysia is the ultimate easy-going, looker of a lawn that's all about maximum green with minimum fuss. So, if you're keen on a lawn that lets you enjoy the weekends while still being the talk of the town, Empire Zoysia's ready to roll out the green carpet.

Empire Zoysia FAQs

  • At least 4 hours of direct sunlight each day.

  • Being a Zoysia, Empire is a slower grower. You can get away with mowing it in two to three week intervals, but it must be consistent. If mowing infrequently, you may scalp and damage the grass, which will take much longer to repair than other varieties, and may cause other issues. The ideal length is between 15 and 30mm, but can be as long as 50mm if you desire a longer look.

  • Empire Zoysia is incredibly drought resistant, and doesn’t need much watering. The equivalent of about 2cm per week should do it (which the weather might do for you anyway). Keep an eye out on dried out or curled leaf blades.

  • Fertilising requirements depend on your usability, and mowing schedule. If your Empire is in a high traffic area, and you’re mowing it regularly, you may need up to 3 fertiliser applications per year (summer, autumn and spring).

If your Empire is in an area with little usage, one to two applications should do.

  • We’re more than happy for you to come and check out our Empire Zoysia up close, and make sure that it’s the best grass for you. Please call us on 0417 852 444 to make an appointment.

  • Empire Zoysia has moderate thatch production. A good lawn reno come spring will keep it healthy and get rid of any sponginess that lies underneath.

  • If you’re looking for a lawn that’s as luscious as a shag-pile carpet, and doesn’t ask for your attention every weekend, Empire Zoysia is for you.

Ready to measure up?

Avoid the dreaded "oops, we ran out of grass" or "uh-oh, we've got too much turf" surprises! Follow these simple steps to get your turf measurements right the first time.

Option A: Use Google Maps

You can check out our ‘how to use Google’s Measuring Tool’ here. Or;

Option B: Measure by Hand

Use the formulas below to determine how to measure for your yard. You can also download a printable PDF version of our Measuring for Turf Guide, so you’ve got all the information in front of you when you’re measuring up.

Square / Rectangle:
Length x width = m2
e.g. 5m x 5m = 25m2

Circle:
(Radius x radius) x 3.14 = m2
e.g. (3m x 3m) x 3.14 = 28.26m2

Semi-circle:
Circle calculations (left) / 2 = m2
e.g. 28.26m2 / 2 = 14.13m2

Triangle:
(Length x width) / 2 = m2
e.g. (10m x 5m) / 2 = 25m2

Unusual Shapes:
Sketch your yard, break it into shapes and use shape calculations above.
e.g. rectangle + square + triangle = m2

Varying Widths:

  1. Measure the longest edge (length)

  2. Divide the widths into 2m sections and measure (width 1, 2, 3, etc.)

  3. Calculate (width 1 + width 2 + width 3) / number of width sections

  4. Multiply by length

e.g. ((5m + 6m + 6m + 7m + 8m)/5) x 10m = 64m2

5. Add a few extra m2 per 100m2 as a buffer
