ORDER MY TURF

Why Choose Palmetto Buffalo Grass?

Soft on Feet, Easy on Allergies

Palmetto boasts the softest leaf of all buffalo varieties, making it a dream for barefoot walks and backyard play. It’s also low in allergens, so your family and pets can roll around without the sneezes.

Less Mowing, More Living

This turf is a slow grower – up to 14% slower than Sir Walter Buffalo – which means less time pushing the mower and more time enjoying your weekends. Plus, it produces less thatch, helping it stay tidy with minimal fuss.

Shade Tolerant and Drought Tough

Palmetto Buffalo thrives with as little as 2–3 hours of direct sunlight per day, making it one of the most shade-tolerant buffalo grasses available. Once established, it holds strong through dry spells, thanks to its high drought resistance.

Plush, Broad Leaf That Thickens Fast

Palmetto has a broad, long leaf – not the fine stuff – giving it a dense, premium look that feels as lush as it looks. It’s also quick to establish, thickening up fast after laying so you can enjoy full coverage sooner.

If Palmetto Buffalo were a mate…

He’d be that easygoing friend who disappears for months and shows up like nothing’s changed—no stress, no drama, just good vibes and solid lawn performance.

Palmetto will make you feel like you’re kicking goals in lawn care, even if you’re not giving it 100%.
Palmetto won’t chew up your weekends with high-maintenance demands or fussiness.

Palmetto Buffalo Grass: The Laid-Back Hero of Aussie Gardens

Palmetto Buffalo Grass is the cool cousin in the turf world—easygoing, reliable, and ready to roll with whatever your yard throws at it. Loved by Aussie homeowners for its lush appearance, soft feel, and low-maintenance attitude, it’s the kind of turf that thrives in the shade, handles the dry, and doesn’t need a lot of attention to look good.

If you’re after buffalo grass that thrives in partial shade, bounces back fast, and doesn’t need constant mowing, Palmetto ticks all the boxes.

Why Choose Palmetto Buffalo Grass?

Shade and Drought Resilience

Palmetto Buffalo Grass only needs 2–3 hours of sunlight each day, making it one of the most shade-tolerant buffalo turf varieties on the market. It’s also highly drought-resistant, able to stay lush and green even through tough Queensland dry spells.

Soft Underfoot, Slow to Grow

With its broad, soft leaf and slow vertical growth, Palmetto offers a thick, comfy carpet feel that doesn’t grow too fast. That means fewer weekends spent behind the mower and more time with your feet up.

Built for Busy Backyards

Whether you’ve got kids, pets, or frequent backyard hangouts, Palmetto stands up to wear and tear. It recovers quickly, keeps its shape, and holds colour year-round.

How to Keep Palmetto Buffalo Looking Top-Notch

Mowing Tips

During warmer months, give it a trim every 7–10 days. In cooler weather, you can relax and mow every 3–6 weeks. For sunny areas, a height of 30–50mm works best, while shady spots benefit from 50–70mm to help photosynthesis.

Fertilising and Pest Control

Apply a slow-release fertiliser in early Autumn and again in Spring to keep growth even and the colour vibrant. For pest protection, we recommend Acelepryn GR pesticide in the same seasons to keep things bug-free and healthy.

Watering Schedule

Water 2–3 times a week during hot weather, giving the lawn a deep soak rather than a surface sprinkle. In cooler months, pull back to once a week or when the leaves start to curl—it’s a great indicator that your lawn’s a little thirsty.

Is Palmetto Buffalo Right for You?

Perfect For:

  • Homes with a mix of shade and sun throughout the yard

  • Families who want a lush lawn with less upkeep

  • Gardeners looking for low-allergen, eco-conscious grass that handles dry spells

Keep in Mind:

If your backyard gets a lot of heavy traffic, a quick tidy-up mow may be needed before weekend footy or cricket sessions. But overall, Palmetto Buffalo Grass is one of the easiest soft-leaf buffalo varieties to manage.

Palmetto Buffalo FAQs

  • Palmetto Buffalo Grass is one of the most shade-tolerant buffalo grass varieties available. It performs exceptionally well with just 2 to 3 hours of direct sunlight per day, making it ideal for yards with partial shade, tree coverage, or homes surrounded by buildings. Unlike many other turf types, Palmetto keeps its vibrant green colour and healthy growth, even in areas that don’t get full sun.

  • One of the biggest perks of choosing Palmetto Buffalo is that it’s a slow-growing buffalo turf, which means less time mowing and more time enjoying your lawn. During the warmer months, mowing every 7 to 10 days is usually enough to keep it neat. When temperatures drop, you can push it out to every 3 to 6 weeks, depending on growth. Aim for a mowing height of 30–50mm in sunny spots and 50–70mm in shaded areas for the healthiest results.

  • Palmetto Buffalo is known for its excellent drought tolerance. In hot or dry conditions, watering it 2 to 3 times per week is usually sufficient. During cooler seasons, scale back to once a week, or simply when the grass starts to show signs of dryness like curling leaves. A deep soak is better than frequent light watering, as it encourages deep root growth and long-term lawn health.

  • To keep your Palmetto Buffalo lawn lush, dense, and vibrant, we recommend applying a slow-release fertiliser twice a year—once in early Spring and again in early Autumn. This gives the grass the nutrients it needs during the main growth periods, helping to improve its colour, growth rate, and resilience against wear, weeds, and weather.

  • Absolutely. We always encourage customers to see our Palmetto Buffalo turf up close to ensure it’s the right fit for their yard. You can visit our farm by appointment to feel the texture, see the colour, and compare it with other varieties in person. Just give us a call at 1800 883 937 to book a time.

  • Like all soft leaf buffalo grasses, Palmetto can produce thatch over time, but it generally forms less thatch than Sir Walter Buffalo. With occasional maintenance—like a lawn renovation in Spring or dethatching every couple of years—your Palmetto lawn will stay level, breathable, and looking great year-round.

  • If you’ve got a backyard that’s partly shaded, want a low-maintenance buffalo grass, and don’t want to spend weekends behind the mower, Palmetto Buffalo Grass is a fantastic choice. It’s soft, strong, shade-tolerant, and ideal for Australian families, pets, and all kinds of gardens. Whether your lawn gets full sun in patches or dappled light through the day, Palmetto adapts well without demanding constant care.

Ready to measure up?

Avoid the dreaded "oops, we ran out of grass" or "uh-oh, we've got too much turf" surprises! Follow these simple steps to get your turf measurements right the first time.

Option A: Use Google Maps

You can check out our ‘how to use Google’s Measuring Tool’ here. Or;

Option B: Measure by Hand

Use the formulas below to determine how to measure for your yard. You can also download a printable PDF version of our Measuring for Turf Guide, so you’ve got all the information in front of you when you’re measuring up.

Square / Rectangle:
Length x width = m2
e.g. 5m x 5m = 25m2

Circle:
(Radius x radius) x 3.14 = m2
e.g. (3m x 3m) x 3.14 = 28.26m2

Semi-circle:
Circle calculations (left) / 2 = m2
e.g. 28.26m2 / 2 = 14.13m2

Triangle:
(Length x width) / 2 = m2
e.g. (10m x 5m) / 2 = 25m2

Unusual Shapes:
Sketch your yard, break it into shapes and use shape calculations above.
e.g. rectangle + square + triangle = m2

Varying Widths:

  1. Measure the longest edge (length)

  2. Divide the widths into 2m sections and measure (width 1, 2, 3, etc.)

  3. Calculate (width 1 + width 2 + width 3) / number of width sections

  4. Multiply by length

e.g. ((5m + 6m + 6m + 7m + 8m)/5) x 10m = 64m2

5. Add a few extra m2 per 100m2 as a buffer
